The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the tragic death of one of its officers, Aminu Sahabi Salisu, in the line of duty. Salisu, an Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, was fatally shot during an operation in Awka, Anambra State, on January 17, 2025. The ill-fated operation was launched by the EFCC’s Enugu zonal office in the early hours of the day. Acting on intelligence, a team of operatives conducted a raid at Dr. J.O. The two-storey building, identified as a hub for cybercriminal activities, was targeted, and 37 suspected internet fraudsters were successfully apprehended during the initial phase of the operation.

However, the situation took a deadly turn when one of the suspects, identified as Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, resisted arrest. Ikechukwu, who was monitoring the EFCC team via a CCTV camera installed at his doorpost, refused to cooperate. Despite repeated and polite requests from the operatives, he resorted to violence, opening fire on the EFCC team. The attack resulted in the death of Salisu and left another officer critically injured. The injured officer is currently receiving medical care, and their condition remains closely monitored.

EFCC’s Response

In the wake of the tragic incident, the EFCC has issued a strong statement condemning both the attack and the spread of misinformation on social media. The commission stressed that the operation was carried out in accordance with established protocols and duly documented at the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters and Area Command.

Following the attack, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Joshua Ikechukwu. The firearm used in the fatal shooting was also recovered.
