EFCC Officer Killed During Anti-Fraud Operation in Anambra State
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the tragic death of one of its officers, Aminu Sahabi Salisu, in the line of duty. Salisu, an Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, was fatally shot during an operation in Awka, Anambra State, on January 17, 2025. The incident underscores the growing challenges faced by anti-corruption operatives in Nigeria as they combat the menace of cybercrime.
Details of the Incident
The ill-fated operation was launched by the EFCC’s Enugu zonal office in the early hours of the day. Acting on intelligence, a team of operatives conducted a raid at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka. The two-storey building, identified as a hub for cybercriminal activities, was targeted, and 37 suspected internet fraudsters were successfully apprehended during the initial phase of the operation.
However, the situation took a deadly turn when one of the suspects, identified as Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, resisted arrest. Ikechukwu, who was monitoring the EFCC team via a CCTV camera installed at his doorpost, refused to cooperate. Despite repeated and polite requests from the operatives, he resorted to violence, opening fire on the EFCC team. The attack resulted in the death of Salisu and left another officer critically injured. The injured officer is currently receiving medical care, and their condition remains closely monitored.
EFCC’s Response
In the wake of the tragic incident, the EFCC has issued a strong statement condemning both the attack and the spread of misinformation on social media. The commission stressed that the operation was carried out in accordance with established protocols and duly documented at the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters and Area Command.
“The unfortunate event has not only taken the life of a dedicated officer but has also underscored the risks associated with the fight against corruption and cybercrime,” the EFCC’s statement read. The commission further reassured the public of its commitment to justice and vowed that such criminal acts would not deter its resolve to curb financial crimes in the country.
Suspect in Custody
Following the attack, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Joshua Ikechukwu. The firearm used in the fatal shooting was also recovered. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the suspect’s motives. The police have promised to collaborate closely with the EFCC to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution.
The tragic death of Aminu Sahabi Salisu has highlighted the increasing dangers faced by anti-graft operatives in Nigeria. The EFCC has expressed growing concerns over the evolving tactics of cybercriminals, many of whom are now armed and involved in a range of violent activities, including kidnapping, banditry, and ritual killings. This alarming trend poses significant challenges to law enforcement agencies and underscores the need for enhanced security measures during operations.
The commission has called for greater public support and cooperation in its efforts to combat corruption and cybercrime. “The loss of one of our own is a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by operatives in the line of duty. We are determined to honor his legacy by ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice,” the EFCC stated.
This incident has reignited discussions about the safety of law enforcement personnel in Nigeria and the need for stronger measures to protect those on the frontlines. It also raises questions about the proliferation of firearms and the boldness with which criminals confront authorities. As investigations continue, stakeholders and policymakers are urged to prioritize the safety of operatives and address the root causes of these escalating threats.
The EFCC’s fight against financial crimes remains critical to Nigeria’s economic stability and global reputation. The tragic loss of Aminu Sahabi Salisu serves as a sobering reminder of the human cost of this battle, and it is hoped that his sacrifice will galvanize further efforts to secure justice and peace in the country.
